iOS Sideloading coming soon...
According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, Apple's iOS 17 will allow iPhone users to download apps from sources other than its official App Store, known as sideloading. This means developers would no longer have to pay the 15 to 30 percent fees charged by Apple, which could be a major change for the company. The move is in response to the European Union's Digital Markets Act, which requires "gatekeeper" companies to open up their platforms to other developers.
Apple has argued that sideloading could compromise the privacy and security of iPhone users, but failure to comply with the DMA could result in fines of up to 20 percent of global revenue. To address security concerns, Apple is considering implementing a verification system, which users would have to pay for instead of the fees currently charged to developers. Other countries, such as the United States, may follow suit and require Apple to allow sideloading.
