US Government warning...
The FBI has issued a warning advising users to avoid public USB ports to protect against malware attacks. Hackers have learned to use public USB ports to introduce malware and monitoring software onto devices, potentially giving them access to sensitive data. To stay safe, users are advised to bring their own charger and USB cord and use an electrical outlet instead of public USB ports.
Apple devices have a USB security feature that prevents the Lightning port from being used for data transfer purposes when the device has been unlocked for over an hour. However, this does not protect against malware installation if the device is actively being used and connected to a public port. The FBI also advises against using public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions, opening suspicious documents, using the same password for all accounts, and clicking unsolicited links in text messages and emails.
